"You have to find out what moves people."--Claiborne Cary
![]()
How many performers have you seen lately opening a show in a bathrobe? And a well-worn comfortable robe, at that, with floppy slippers. Of course, Claiborne Cary isn't your usual performer. She's sharp, witty, and keenly musical. And if you've seen her perform, you're already a fan.
Just ask anyone at a Cabaret Convention, where Claiborne Cary always seems to steal the show with her ability to slice to the soul of the song and lay it open, such is her way with "Something Cool," or Stephen Sondheim's ballad from Follies, "In Buddy's Eyes."
To say nothing of her most recent trip to Town Hall. Strolling on stage, her short figure poured into in outrageous hooker get-up including platform shoes straight out of The Life, Claiborne plopped down her shopping bag and sang, what else, but Cole Porter's, "Love For Sale," pausing once to yell, "Ah Shaddup!" to an imaginary heckler.
If you haven't seen this irrepressible performer, hurry and book a reservation wherever she's playing. You've got a treat in store.
"With her craggy,
lived in voice, elegant pop-jazz phrasing and cheerfully self-deprecatory
wit, Ms. Cary...often recalls the much missed salon singer, Sylvia Syms.
Add a big dash of Phyllis Diller and a smaller one of Roseanne and you
get Ms. Cary's complex blend of toughness, pathos and comedy."
- Stephen
Holden, The New York Times.
